Increasing conversion of your webshop is the fastest way to get more return from your marketing? Why? The actions you have to take take little time and the impact is incredibly high.
What is conversion optimization and how can I increase conversion?
Every month this question comes up in my conversations with entrepreneurs. In my experience, conversion is the most important part of internet marketing. It determines the success of your company.
Conversion is the ratio between the total number of people and the group of people who actually take action. On a website, webshop or application, but also in a physical store made of bricks, these can be different actions:
- whether or not to walk in the door
- fill in a contact form
- fill in a quotation form
- a subscription to a mailing list
- the purchase of a product
- the click from one page to another
At my webshop LifeDeals.com I have to deal with conversion optimization on a weekly basis. The conversion rate varies between 2.5 and 3.5%. The amount of it often depends on things like spending space, budget, target group, etc. Due to COVID-19, the conversion was high because more people were at home, but now with the cost crisis, people are keeping their hands on their wallets, the conversion is on average lower.
An example of a conversion in a website
Suppose you have a website with 100 visitors a day. A number of people find you and your website interesting, a number of them leave again. Let’s say 3 find you interesting and make a contact request. Your conversion on the contact request is 3%.
Suppose that 50% of those requests actually become a customer and spend an average of € 1000 with you. Your turnover that day is 3 x 0.5 x 1000 is € 1,500,-. This is already fantastic of course!
An example of conversion in a store
Suppose you have a physical shop of stones and there are 100 people walking by your door every day. 20 of them walk in. Your conversion of runners and inbounds is 20%. Of those 20, 10% buy a product of € 50,-. Your turnover is € 100,-. Your conversion of inbound and buyers is 10%. By optimizing 1 or both conversion moments, you can greatly increase the turnover of your store. Suppose that by adjusting your shop window suddenly 30 out of 100 come in. Of those 30, 10% buy your € 50 product,-. Your turnover has suddenly increased by 50%(!).
Why is conversion optimization important?
In the example above, € 1,500 per day of turnover was made with a conversion of 3%. A good performance but on the other hand; only 3 in 100 found the courage to contact us (without obligation).
Suppose that 3% would become 5%. We do the same sum again but with a conversion of 5%. There are 100 visitors today, of which 5 make an application. Again 50% become customers who spend an average of € 1000, -. Your turnover today is 5 x 0.5 x 1000 is € 2,500,-.
This is a turnover increase of 66.67%! In which year did you last experience this?
This is why conversion optimization is extremely important. Especially because markets are increasingly saturated by competition, many competitors steal visitors from you and more and more turnover is taking away from you. In addition, you can also improve the conversion of your store. You can even double your turnover with it.
